I love the South---the culture, weather, people (most of them, anyway.) It's just a great place to live, with a couple of exceptions, which I'll get to.
My TOP picks: Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, western North Carolina, west and middle Tennessee
Not my top picks but still great places: the rest of NC and TN, South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas (west of Little Rock,) and Oklahoma.
Here are my exceptions:
-Kentucky: that place has the sourest people I've EVER seen in my life. Try making bets that very few people (especially women) will even say "thank you" when you hold a door open for them...I bet you'll win. The place sucks!
-Florida: same reasons, but it does have lot of jobs. It's kind of boring after you hit all the tourist attractions, however. (Side note: I like the weather.)
-Virginia: too rushed, b/c it's the southern end of the Megalopolis.
West Virginia doesn't count as South, no offense to anybody who lives there.

Intelligent and curious: Actually, I do agree with you. That's an insult to true Southerners. I went on and included it b/c Jefferson Davis...but that's it. Thanks!

Florida is best, particularly West Palm, North Miami Beach and St. Pete's area. Best of both worlds. There are lots of northern transplants and the weather is great (minus the hurricanes).
As for the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, Mississippi, etc., that's just too country for me. Sure, some of it is beautiful, but it's still too, too country and rural once you get outside the metro area. Visiting is fine, but as for living, I tried it and didn't like it. Also, politically, the folks are a little too right wing and fundamentalist for my taste. For those that are like-minded, please, feel free to go. But unless it's southern FL, I think north of the Mason Dixon line is better.

*NEWS FLASH PEOPLE* Arizona is not a part of the south! lol ! Virginia is a part of the south it is just under the mason dixon line. Sorry to burst any one's bubble. I love North Carolina and South Carolina. I was born in SC but I now live in SC. I don't like certain parts of Florida like Daytona Beach. A lot of the people I encountered there were not friendly at all. I Love Tennessee, especially Memphis! Mississippi is OK there is just not a whole lot to do when you're there. Alabama is a nice place. It's very laid back. Arkansas is also a nice state. Georgia is great! I love the ATL!!

First of all unless you are in Canada a lot of those states aren't southern states.Texas isn't its just Texas,
I find the people unfriendly and out side of the bigger cities, racist and backward.(all my family except me was born there so I know) Next Oklahoma is the crotch of the bible belt and backward even in the bigger cities, its racist and 20 yrs behind in everything( I was born in OK so I know)I like Louisiana ,great foods and people,Mississippi has come a long way but is still a very poor state,I don't like Fla.too crowded,Virgina is OK but too many people,
I agree on the Kentucky assessment, neither of the Carolina's,same as Kentucky to me,Alabama is OK only because Charles Barkley my favorite all time BB player is running for governor in 2008,Tennessee good food and nice people,Ark and Georgia OK,Atlanta is a good city. did I miss any state you asked about of mentioned?
I live in the southwest, AZ and I like the desert ,I also like Indiana ,I'm surprised but its very pretty and green,I love NM, as well .but I have traveled and lived a lot of places but after all is said and done I still love any where in this great country better than any where in the world I have traveled..

Texas is an amazing and beautiful state. I grew up in Washington State (a very pretty place) but parents were Texans. They settled up there, I came down here after summer visits growing up. I love San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Dallas and many of the smaller rural communities. People are considerate, nice, have great manners and hospitable.

My top picks:
My bottom picks: All the rest. I've hated everywhere I've been in the Barbaric Realms.
My bottom, bottom, bottom there is a special place reserved for this place: Texas. I spent 10 months there, they were the longest 30 years of my life. If I owned Hell and Texas I would rent out Texas and live in Hell.

In your mention of Kentucky for which I hold great disdain, did you intend for its inclusion as a southern state? That would be a great offense to true southerners.

The Souff is horrible. Go tour any plantation house and find where they got everything (furniture, etc). From the North. Without the north, the pitiful souff would not exist as we know it today. Did I forget to tell you that I am moving to Texas? I get allergic smelling hay.
