In an earthquake, the ideal situation is to get outside, where nothing can fall on you. This isn't always possible though- during a major earthquake (7.0 or above), walking can be very difficult because the ground is "rolling" or pulsing underneath you. I have heard of people trying to run down a hallway when an earthquake began, and they were bouncing all over the walls! (Imagine trying to walk across a large trapoline while all your friends are jumping on it). Also So then, if you happen to be right next to an exit during an earthquake, get outside; If you're not by an exit though, you should try to get under the strongest structure possible as fast as you can (remember that even very large earthquakes happen very quickly, lasting less than 1 minute usually, so you only have seconds to react!). In normal house, door-frames are good to stand under because they are very sturdy. If you live in a two story home, the stairs are typically the strongest part of the house, and if there is a closet or bathroom underneath the stairs, that's a good place to be too. If you don't have time, or aren't able to get under any of these, jump under a desk or other strong piece of furniture. Some good trivia to keep in mind: Most earthquake injuries are small, but deep cuts on the feet from people getting out of bed in earthquakes with no shoes to put on! They run for a door, or a safe place, but step on lots of glass along the way. Its a good idea to keep a pair of slippers by your bed if you live in an earthquake area.

Stand under a door way if in the house. If outside stand still until it is over, try to be in a spot where there are no power lines etc...if in the car ( most of the time your not going to feel it ) but if stopped on a bridge or over pass, I would get out and run off of it,if the earth quake was a "bad" one...What a bonus we get for living in California....its better then having hurricanes/tornado's though :)

Earthquakes are led to by ability of ruptures on important faults: Faults in turn are related to plate tectonic motions and stresses, so earthquakes tend to be worry-unfastened close to plate limitations. This contains the circum-Pacific belt (the so-referred to as 'ring of hearth'), the San Andreas fault in California, the collision zones in the Himalaya and in Iran, and China. There are fewer earthquakes on the extra stable continental aspects like Africa and Australia and Western Europe, yet they do ensue. A map of earthquake interest (see refs below) exhibits that the mid-ocean ridges ar additionally seismicly energetic, yet as they have an inclination to be a techniques from land, they don't seem to be felt as much as those on land or in the trenches next to land (like the Sumatran Earthquake on Boxing Day 2004.)

If you can't get out of the house, stand in the doorway. Door frames are the most solid parts of any house.

If you are in school you should stay away from mirrors or hide under tables and desks. If you are outside you should stand in open space. If in a house you should also stay away from mirrors and you should get under a bed or a table.
