I am a Chinese herbalist and I recommend "red rice yeast" all the time. You can get it at a health food store.
The pharmacuetical companies want to ban it because it works so well. It will compete against their more toxic drugs.

Enhancing Immune Function: Very often people announce a sickness by saying they have a "cold bug", or a "flu bug." These infectious critters are a familiar part of our conversations around the workplace and home. Almost everyone accepts the power of these "bugs" at face value. Having a "bug" can serve as full and complete explanation for a person's low energy, sickness, absence, or even as the cause of major chronic problems. We are all constantly exposed to viruses and other organisms, but we don't always get sick. And not all of us gets sick even when "a bug is going around. "Why? Some light is cast on this question by other statements we sometimes here from people who get sick. A person might say: "I wasn't taking good care of myself," or, "I wore myself down from working too hard," or, "I've been stressed lately." These people seem to think that their susceptibility or resistance to disease is the key to why they got sick. This latter perspective focuses not on the germ, but on the health of what is called "the immune system." This system is responsible for protecting us from infection, allergy, and even cancer. Most conventional medical doctors either undervalue or overlook altogether the importance of a susceptibility or "host." If host susceptibility is acknowledged, it tends to be as an afterthought. Many doctors don't think to focus their treatments on this important component of the disease picture. A great way to think about this approach to a healthy immunity is to consider what it takes to be a lousy host of a party. How could you make sure someone would have a bad time and not want to return? First, get to know what your guests like , then serve what they dislike. If they love burgers, serve them tofu. If they love hard rock, give them Mozart. If they think all natural health care quackery, go on forever about the value of vitamin! If it's the end of the party and people aren't leaving, make some big changes: Change the environment. Remove the darkness. Turn on the lights. Remove the pleasure. Stop the music. Glare at them. Guest are not going to want to hang around. Make your body into a very inhospitable environment for "flu bugs," "cold bugs<' and other diseases. Zinc is an important cofactor in the manufactures, secretion, and function of the thymic hormones. When zinc levels are low, T-cell numbers go down. White blood cells become inefficient for a range of activities. Zinc also has antioxidant activity, which is important in maintaining thymic integrity. Supplementation has shown these effects to be reversible, as was found in the study of the elederly. Vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and selenium, as well as Zinc, have an additional important value in maintaining a healthy thymus. As antioxidants, they can help enhance the immune system by preventing the thymic involution brought about by the stress of free radicals. Thymus Extracts: One of the fascinating characteristics of thymus extract in immune enhancement is its balancing role. Thymus extract is associated with enhancing T - cell production in AIDS patients, where production of these Special Forces agents is low. Echinacea and the Immune System: During 1992 and 1993, the value of certain herbs began to get favorable airtime in the mainstream media. One of the first to gain serious exposure was echinacea. The most thoroughly researched Echinacea products are produced from the fresh-pressed juice of Echinacea purpurea. Enchinaguard from Nature's Way and EchinaFresh from Enzymatic Therapy are two excellent products to choose from. Other forms of Echinacea may be just as beneficial. Some other companies marketing good sources of Echinacea include: HerbPharm, Gaia, Eclectic Institute, and McZand. As a general immune enhancer, Echinacea can be given in any of the following forms three times daily. Dried root (or as tea) - 0.5-1 gram EchinaGuard or EchinaFresh - 4 ml (2 teaspoons) Tincture (1:5) - 2 - 4 ml (1-2 teaspoons) Fluid extract (1:1) - 1-2 ml (0.5-1 teaspoons) Solid (dry-powdered) extract (6.5:1 or 3.5% echinacoside) - 100-250 mg When used at the recommended dosages, there is no danger of toxicity with echinacea.
