What percentage of Americans think that tractor pulls and wrestling are cultural events? How many Americans have read even one classic piece of literature that they weren't forced to read (school)? How many have art appreciation? How many have seen a ballet?

Americans are 'cultured', as there is no way to avoid being exposed to some form of culture (even in isolation, one creates a sort of culture). However, there are what some consider 'high' and 'low' cultures.

'High' culture is often considered that of the 'elite': ballet, opera, art museums, interest in 'classic' literature and poetry, polo, crochet, electic architecture, etc.

'Low' culture is often considered that of the 'working class': watching television, popular music, tractor pulls (carnivals, fairs, etc.), and most sporting events where contact is involved.

In America, we are lucky to have opportunities to be exposed to both 'high' and 'low' culture, as our libraries are public (for the most part), education is available to both 'elite' and 'working' classes, and many communities sponsor free cultural events. However, the working class have less opportunity to enjoy things like 'classic' art (in museums that require fees for entry), opera, polo, etc. because the people who sit on the boards for these cultural entities place distance (physical and economic) between the working class and the mode of 'high' art to maintain a sort of exclusivity.

I think the Internet will change a lot of that. With more and more working class folks learning to access things they wouldn't have been able to before, we have more opportunities for exposure to supposedly more 'sophisticated' art forms, literatures, etc.

More Americans get a higher education then any other people so we probably come out on top. After all, our high school grads are more educated then something like 80% of the world population. So you have to ask yourself: how many people in other countries do those things?
By the way, sports are cultural events, every book is art, and at least we go to school.

Your question sounds quite ignorant. Of course Americans read, speak other languages, study art, etc...I went to public schools in Virginia and we often took field trips to see the ballet, the opera, art museums, etc...AND tractor pulls and wrestling are REALLY fun! You're missing out if you thing you are too good or "cultured" not to try it. Being "cultured" is about all cultures, not just European arts like ballet. It sounds like you need some culture yourself.

Culture is a relative thing and what u call culture may not be what americans have

Infact there can't be a country without culture because culture means whatever that country has

If ur american then u should be proud of all those things and even if not u have to accept that its in ur culture

If u think its bad then change it but till then thats ur culture

So American can't be uncultured as there is no such thing as unculture

,Americas misfortune is that it has traditionally been known only for it's folk and regional culture and because of the downturn in Art & Cultural Education that you intuite, the modern culture of this country is being dictated by the market place. At first that may not seem so bad but the market place has no real ethical requirement beyond what is legal while an important aspect of culture is the sense of manners, ettiquette, and ethical values it teaches or instills.

That said you can see we have a real problem!

I like it all ... Opera at the Central City Oprah House; Love Opera even though my friends and family are about to kill me when I sing it (giggle) ... Tractor Pulls are so fun ... Cirque Du Sole & Blue Man Group so worth seeing Vegus 4 ... Drag-Racing tracks has hot men ... I've been to several art museums (USA, Europe, and Asia) ... never been to a wresting match (yet) --- I think I'd rather see a WFV show ... yeah, I've seen the Russian Ballet perform Swan Lake ... and I've seen NSYNC in Concert.

I just hate it when things get boring and repetative.

We have the worst system of education in the world. Most of our college graduates can't even spell or do basic arithmetic. In spite of this, we call ourselves civilized.

Are we cultured? Well, we have the best symphonic orchestras, the best performers, the greatest composers, we horde books, we even have art-museums and art-shops in the most remote villages. We have the world's top ballet dancers performing for our pleasure. Well, I guess if this is not cultured, then I probably don't understand culture the same way as you do.

A great many are uncultured. Just go to Starbucks and listen to the person's conversation on the phone next to you. And if you indicate to them that their conversation was culturally bankrupt or lacked a certain sense of style and grace, they will almost certainly be angry with you.

The backside line is that torture is unlawful. We cannot do it with out being in violation of global legislation. I see wherein every person is so disenchanted approximately Illegal extraterrestrial beings no longer following the legislation and the way we (and I agree) must maintain them to the legislation. Yet this hypocrisy that we exhibit robs us of credibility. This stance that humans exhibit of being hard on unlawful immigration and gentle on torture is solely insane. The legislation is the legislation. We ought to be the higher leaders and set the instance to the leisure of the sector. We ought to comply with the identical legislation we call for enforced or we are not any higher than our possess enemies. Torture is a slippery slope. Anyone that "feels secure" with torture has a significant intellectual flaw. So a few of the humans right here boast approximately how they might do it. OK - pass forward - publish or close up - pass clutch your nearest relative and torture them. If you'll be able to do this then you'll be able to torture someone. Torture is an act of evil, it's so convenient to justify evil while you're so specified you're correct. I surprise - How lots of you professional-torture humans are Christians that dislike Muslims? If you're professional-torture I ought to query your sanity.

well first of all you can't really expect to like the same thing that you do because we are individuals and we need to do our own thing and not what everyone else is doing. so you can't said that we are unculture just because people don't like what you like we can like whatever we want and we have brought different culture into america so you can't said that we are unculture just because we don't like what you like.
