if you're not having sex, there's no need for the pills. it's pointless to take them JUST to regulate your period. irregular periods are fairly common.

well, in that case... you might ask about one of those pills where it makes you get your period only once every 4 months (e.g., seasonale). as far as side effects, you can look them up on lots of websites for the particular brand.

You'll be fine. The only side effect I ever had was I gained about 6 pounds but it came right back off after a few weeks. I know you said you're not having sex, but if you ever feel the urge, if you get put on the same pills I was on it will absolutely kill your sex drive. A good side effect: your skin will be practically flawless. No breaking out at all. Also your periods will be rather light. Just remember to take it the same time every day, give or take an hour but no more than that. I missed a pill by about 5 hours and started bleeding because of it. Didn't stop bleeding til my next period stopped. That sucked, it was about 3 weeks! Grrrrr. You'll be fine, nothing to be scared of.

Wow... you have gotten so many BS answers here. Yes, birth control pills can have many side effects, including depression, pimples, weight gain, nausea, etc. You can find out what htey are by reading the package insert. These side effect may go away with time, or you may not have any. You won't know until you try. Don't be scared. If they are too much to deal with, you can always try a different type of pill, there are many, and one of them can work fine for you. You don't have to take them. Irregular periods are OK, too. Just be prepared, and carry tampons in your purse.

A low dose birth control pill will not usually have any bad side effects if taken as prescribed. If you smoke then there is an increased chance of blood clots. If your doctor gives you samples that will have all the side effects listed in the paperwork. If he doesn't give samples the same information will be listed when you pick up the pills.

the pills that seem to have the least side effects are ortho-tricyclene. Don't do the patch - they are starting to find out bad things about it now - and it wouldn't stay on when I worked out.
One that made me really depressed in about 3 days was Yasmin.
If you notice any mood changes in a few days to a month or so after starting - you should look into other options.
Here's some more info on some of the side effects. One major one for me is I have no libido with ortho-tri anymore.

And another great one about what conditions certain pills are good for treating:

Your doctor will certainly discuss the actions and side effects of the pills before prescribing them. You can also get this information from a pharmacist, or from the package insert that comes with the pills.

side effects depend on the type of pill ur put on...usually the current prescription is of combined pills =estrogen and progestrone pills.
the currently available pills in the market are proven safe and ve extremely low levels of hormones in them.
but side effects may include
thromboembolism
increased blood pressure
liver damage
nausea
etc
but believe me if ur younger than 35 and ve no habit of smoking ...u r totally safe from these complications.
and also these pills will be on for a few month cycles....and will be stopped immediately as soon as your cycles regularize
SO DONT WORRY AND TRUST UR DOCTOR

They fill your body with horrible steroids that will in the long term probably induce cancer on some part of your reproductive system. You should probably not take them if you can regulate your period in any other natural way. Research some herbs and things. Talk to a natural remedies doctor.

The best thing to do is be open and honest with your concerns with the doctor and realize that just like any other prescription drug it will affect different people in a different way. So if you notice any change or side affect report it to the doctor who prescribed it.

The only immediate side effect might be nausea if you take on an empty stomach. Otherwise, you should feel fine. Of course, the side effects of blood clots and strokes and heart attacks are rare and you are advised not to smoke with them.
