I recently applied at a well know temp agency in Pittsburgh and my initial interview went well. I was asked by my temp agent if I could reduce my hourly rate by 2 dollars for 3 months with the possiblity of a raise at the end of my review. This all was okay with me. I was set up to go an interview with a solid company and my temp agent strictly expressed to me not to discuss money with the employer. I followed her instructions and the interview went well. My temp agent asked me to call her and explain the details of my interview. I discussed with her that the prospective employer and I talked for an hour, we seemed to click and that I could see myself working for her and the organization. This is where the tide changes, my temp agent asked me if I could take this job for a lower amount of money than was agreed upon. She said that the employer may decline the offer if I wasn't flexible in reducing the rate. I don't believe her, any advice on how this game is played?

As other posters have said, the employer is charged a much higher hourly rate than you are paid. Out of the difference the agency pays for your Workmen's Comp Insurance (you are an employee of the agency, not the employer), any drug testing or pre-employment physical that may have been required, plus their overhead before they begin to make any profit.

It may be that the position simply does not pay the money that you are looking for.

The temp agency and the employer have already agreed to a standard hourly rate. That is cast in stone.

An example would be the employer pays the temp agency $15 per hour for any temp.

The temp agency pay the temp $10 per hour.

The only way for them to make more is to pay you less, don't buy it.

They don't want you talking money with the employer because they may have an understanding that the temp employee makes a minimum of $10.

The temp agency charges an hourly rate to the company and pays you a lower rate, their commission is the difference. For example they charge the company $15 bucks, pay you $10 bucks.

The temp agency makes several dollars off every hour you work as they bill the customer. The lower amount you willing to take, the more they make for them.

They take a piece of your salary, which is why you're not to ever discuss your paycheck with your employer. Also, if the office decides to keep you, they have to pay something to the temp agency.

If the agency doesn't charge you directly they charge the company they send you to then they turn around and charge you and at the same time underpaying you for a job you could have gotten much more for if you went through the company directly.
