I was told by my Dr. that we do carve what we need, but because of the way we eat these days our cravings can be misread.

Absolutely, that is the original anthropological reason for cravings. We probably would not have survived as a species if we did not crave for the foods we need. But take the time to think about your cravings. An Ice cream craving is probably a calcium deficiency. A sugar or candy craving may mean that you need to eat some fruit, maybe you are lacking vitamin C. After all ice cream and snickers bars were not around when we started having cravings

To a certain extent, yes. A lot of us crave salty foods, and we need more salt & other minerals than we normally do. Also, many of us crave fruits an veggies. (often mixed with hot sauce, or whipped cream, or whatever, but still!) I think mostly, though, our bodies crave something because of a need, but we fill the craving with a substitute and not what our body was really asking for.

I believe that. I ate more ice cream in 9 months than in my whole life. Plus I ate cereal almost every morning. I think my body needed dairy and I had to feed that need. They say babies that had dairy in the womb came out bigger and my daughter was 8lbs 15 oz.
And those that say no, because some craze soil and chalk. That's a fact that pregnant women that do that have an iron deficiency and that's why they are craving and eating those things.

Maybe, maybe not...but I certainly needed what I craved! LOL I am assuming you mean pregnancy-wise, and yes, there is some evidence that what you crave food wise when pregnant, (or anytime, actually) has some nutrient that your body needs at that moment. Just be sure your cravings stay in the food groups, and eat sensibly other times, and you'll be fine!

No, because I'm craving a beer or a whiskey and coke, and that's way off limits. LOL.
Honestly, I don't think it's a yes or no answer. I think some of the things we crave (oranges, milk, brocolli, meat) we crave because we need it. Others (clay, beer, cigarettes) we crave because we shouldn't have it.

Yes, I do. You will find if you eat what you are craving, you will not crave it anymore. Unless you are a compulsive mess in general.
Especially if you look at what nutritional value your craving provided.
ex. peppers or oranges=kind of an unusual craving..but did you know that they are high in vitamin C.

In some cases, yes. With my first pregnancy, I craved strawberries and steak. Maybe I was low on iron and vitamin A? With my second pregnancy, I craved fudgesicles. I don't know what I could have been low on in that case...sugar? LOL

Yeah. But sometimes we don't know what we're craving so we guess and get it wrong.
