My favorite is Wilson Rawls, though he may qualify more as a "children's" author.

How can you not like "Summer of the Monkeys" and "Where the Red Fern Grows"? You're not human if you don't shed a tear after reading "Where the Red Fern Grows"

I also enjoyed reading books by Katherine Paterson (notably "Bridge to Terabithia"), Ray Bradbury ("Something Wicked This Way Comes" and "Fahrenheit 451"), Aldous Huxley ("Brave New World") and George Orwell ("Animal Farm" & "1984"). These works have broad appeal and can be enjoyed by people young and old again and again.

Gosh, I could go on but...well, I hope you can appreciate my preferences.

As a young'un, my favorite authors were Ellen Conford and Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. They are great authors in tune to the teenage mind. But I enjoyed a lot of authors as a teen: Christopher Pike, Judy Blume, Madeline L'engle, Beverly Cleary and Richard Peck.

LaMontagne and Snyder - they wrote King Fortis the Brave, a great book about a pair of twelve-year-old twins that are brought into a magical world where they find themselves caught in a battle for control of the land. Full of adventure and humor, it is perfect for young adults (and I know a lot of older adults who have enjoyed it as well)

I don't know if he still writes, but my favorite "young adult" author when I was young was Christopher Pike.
