If you want to run both Apple and Windows software then your only choice is a Mac. But if you just want to run Windows then all of the brands you mention are equal. Also HP and Compaq are the same company now, so either of those would be fine too. I live in the USA and get better english speaking tech support with my Gateway than my friends say they get with the others.

I have a mac right now and it works great. I have it on intel chips and there really isn't all that much limitation on it. On the MacBook Pro, the track pad is huge, the screen is really bright, and it isn't slowing down as i put more stuff on it. Also, now that you can run windows on a mac, there really isn't a need for a pc. I'd go with mac all the way, the if you MUST have windows, then get anything but a DELL. They have the worst computers ever. My friend bought one a week ago, and he says its allready slowed down considerably. NO DELL!!!

Well No to Mac, Sony or Gateway. I suggest Dell or IBM. IBM Is selling Notebooks under the Lenovo Brand name. They are quite good.

I've had great experiences with Dell laptops. The thing I like the most about them is that many of them are modular and allow for processor and video upgrades down the road, and parts are inexpensive so they are easy to repair after the warranty is over.
