The behaviour you're describing can be either territorial aggression or pre-spawning courtship. If they are digging pits leads me to believe that it is more likely to be courtship.

They are testing each other to see who is the strongest, most agressive. Strength is a big factor with oscars and many other cichlids from South America. One of them will end up as the dominant fish and then the other's life will become a living h*ll. The dominant one will continually harrass and bite the subordinate one until it dies or you remove it.

The only sure way to end up with a compatible male and female as a pair is to buy 6-8 small (2-3") oscars and raise them to maturity. Along the way to becoming 14-15" fish, you may end up with one or two pairs. A pair of mature oscars need a minimum of a 75 gallon tank to spawn and raise their young. Anything less than a 50 gallon tank for a single adult oscar is crowding it.

They're duking it out for space in the tank. Some Oscars have been known to rip their lips off doing that. It could end in death, but unless you separate them, there's nothing you could do. It's natural though.

they are either fighting or courting, both look about the same
and both could result in death
keep good watch and try to determine what they are doing, meanwhile have an extra tank set up and ready in case you
have to move one of them
i had a 100 gallon aquarium with 6 breeders in it, they got really rowdy and broke the glass out!

No, they aren't killing eachother. They are breeding. I know that sounds wierd, but please believe me. If you don't want over 1000 Oscars, put them in different tanks or sell one.

if your oscar only stays in one place, it means that it is guarding its territory. they may also be reproducing because cichlids are vicious when they mate.
