My son was just married on July 1 and the bridesmaids all wore black strapless dresses. I was skeptical about this for a summer wedding, but I thought it was very nice. It was an outdoors wedding ceremony and an extremely hot day. The other accent color was pale pink. The groomsmen and best man all wore black tuxedos with white shirts and pink boutonnieres. Anyways, I'm curious what others will respond to this question, too.
Also, I think the bride thought the girls would be able to wear the dresses at other times in the future as they would be more suitable for dressy dinners/dances, etc., so would be more than a "one-time" dress.

Yes, this is the bride's day and if she wants black bridesmaid's dresses, she get's black. bridesmaid's dresses.
Black seems more appropriate for an evening wedding versus another time, becuase it tends to be cooler in the evening (if in the summer) and black is typically an after 5 color. But what color she prefers it's her choice.

If you think so, then yes it is. If its your wedding, then do what ever you want. If you do something because it isn't normal or proper according to so and so, then you will wish you had done your wedding differently and will regret it the rest of your life or every time you look at the pictures. Besides, you can't go wrong with a black dress.... I went to a wedding and they had the brides mates all in pink... and pink does not go with every ones hair color, skin tone, or size, so some of the girls looked really pretty, and some who i knew to be very pretty, looked ridiculous. So, black is a good choice if its what you like, especially since everyone can look good in black.

Why Not, I actually went to a wedding where the bridesmaids dresses were black and had a white belt like ribbon.

If that's what you want, why not?
Actually, I think that was the really in style color for bridesmaid dresses in the late 80's and early 90's.

It's called a black and white wedding and they are traditionally the most formal wedding. After 6PM, bridesmaids in black gowns, groomsmen in black tuxes, guests in gowns and tuxes. Remember your senior prom? LOL
It is getting more acceptable to use black in weddings, but if you don't want Great-Aunt Effie complaining, then do the whole theme as described above.
Some ideas:

Sure it is. My wife's bridesmaids all had black dresses. They also had yellow shawls to go with the white-and-yellow flowers, so you may want to consider something like that for a splash of color.

i don't see why not. my sister in law had black bridesmaid dresses with just a bit of white on them. i think as long as you like it it is fine. it's the bride and grooms dy after all, not everyone else's.

It's pretty dark. If you're the bride though and you think the dresses are pretty, than get them. It's your day! If you aren't the bride or groom, than just respect their decisions.
