I've actually work for people that were promoted to at least their 10th level of incompetence. All because of who they knew (or did). Though I did work for one company that would backward promote people if they couldn't do the job (all promotions were temporary assignments officially, but if you could do the job it would become a permanent position). It was actually good because with very few excepting your boss actually was competent.

Its actually an old sociological term called the Peter Principle. It probably happened more when corporations were really big and had lots of vertical levels so there was plenty of room for advance ment.

The idea was that people would be continually promoted up the ladder until they became incompetent... and that's where they stayed. So you have a company full of people who are incompetent at their positions.

It makes sense if you think about it. You do good work, get promoted and new responsibilties. You do good there and get promoted and get more responsibilities. Suddenly you've got so much you can't be as competent with everything and that's when your work becomes average - you're too busy.

People stop getting promoted when they reach their level of incompetence. As long as they are competent in handling higher responsibilites they are promoted. There is nothing called first level of incompetence. There is only one level at which one becomes incompetent and it varies from person to person.

Yes. They are closely watched and if they show superior incompetence their rise to the top is very swift. Only a politician can get to the top faster or perhaps a lawyer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alot of people at my husbands work do forbeing suck ups. Yet my Spouse and his friend are the best inthere department and get ****. On their reviews the bosses find nothing wrong with them yet on the others reviews there is all kinds of things put down on what to fix. (going to the bar with the group finds to be interesting in review season)
