The mortgage company has to follow privacy laws that will most likely prevent them from giving any information out to you.

From the credit report that was run on you, get the property address and go down to the county clerk or registrar of deeds and pull the recorded deed AND recorded mortgage for the property. This will give you all the information you need to contact the lender.

Do NOT sit around calling their 800 numbers. Send a certified letter to their legal department informing them of the fraud.

I do at least one closing a day (usually 2 or 3) and most lenders require photo ID to be shown at a closing, along with a social security card.

Are you sure this isn't just some sort of mistake on your credit report (similar name but different person)?

You will need to have a fraud alert placed on your credit report.

Obviously when you applied for a mortgage it showed up on your credit report. The bank should be able to provide you the name and number of the mortgage company that the loan is through. That would be your first step. Then contact the mortgage company. I dont think this is an issue that is going to get resolved in 30 days.

1st, get a copy of your credit report and issue a fraud warning to all 3 bureaus (equifax, transunion, and experian).

On your credit report it will have the account number for the mortgage and the creditor that issued it. Call up the lender, verify that it wasn't a reporting error on their part, but that it was actually fraud.

After that, I would get in touch with your local police and possibly even the FBI - the fraud divisions, and let them know what happened.

If you don't get the run-around you should have this resolved before your contract expires on the house.

If you are in the U.S.:

Get a copy of your credit report. You can do so for free in a number of ways, but the easiest/fastest way is to go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp. The mortgage company should be listed on your credit report.

Also, look around on the U.S. government's site dedicated to dealing with identity theft: http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/.

In addition, speak to your real estate agent or whomever you are going through in order to purchase the house. Apprise them of the situation. See if they (and thereby the one[s] selling the house) will be willing to work something out with you, to "hold" the house while you are clearing up this case of fraud/identity theft. Surely they are aware of this problem, as it has become rather common in the U.S.

Good luck to you.

The above answer is good, but you need to file a fraud report now with your local police department.
Since there is so much ID theaft these days, the police report may help you to close as scheduled.
