Hmmm, what a question... Ok, here's a list of films, with a brief summary, but I won't spoil the enjoyment for anyone who wish to see these films.

Italian: Cinema Paradiso
(About A famed director thinking back to when he was a small boy in a sicilian village growing up, with a cinema projectionist as a father figure/mentor) A beautiful film

Mexican: Like Water For Chocolate
(About the youngest daughter of a family, Tita, who wasn't allowed to marry, but had to serve her mother as long as her mother lived, but naturally she fell in love. Pedro, the suitor, was persuaded to marry her sister, so he could be near Tita. Thwarted, Tita poured her emotions into her cooking. If she was sad while cooking, the food was imbued with her sadness, thus making people sad, who ate the food. Tita happy? People eating her food was made happy. and so on. Excellent. (Imagine living with your sister who married your boyfriend, and the smouldering looks over the dining table...)

Indian: Veer
A Pakistani girl falls in love with an Indian man. Her family arranged her marriage with a Pakistani officer. Things happened... the film is about a man in jail for 22 years. He refused to explain what happened. The Pakistani officer did a terrible thing... I recommend you go and see this film, if possible.

Japanese: The Seven Samurai
Seven samurai help villagers protect their village from bandits. Say no more.

French: Le Grand Chemin
A couple are in the midst of separating, and they send their son to a rural village for a holiday. He makes friends, and inadvertently help the childless couple he is staying with.(Hollywood made a ghastly remake of this film, which I won't name.)

The list goes on. You asked for a favourite film, not films... Hmmm, that's a tough decision to make. At this moment in time "Like Water for Chocolate" (Mexico), I suppose.

(My choice depends on my mood.)

Ran - Akira Kurosawa (1985)

This is a Japanese adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear. An aging warlord decides to split his kingdom between his three sons, who will live in three separate castles. The two eldest sons are quite happy, but the youngest thinks his father has gone mad, and predicts that it won't be long until the two older brothers are fighting with each other.
