I just had my brakes fixed and they are screeching. It feels like I have to push them down when braking. what is the problem?

High metal content in the pads can cause screeching and if the rotors were resurfaced and they didn't get a smooth surface on them it will take extra foot effort to stop the car. A rough surface reduces pad contact.

If they didn't lube or put in a vibration pad behind the pads, they can vibrate and make noise. This shouldn't cause you any worries on stopping ability.
Sometimes when you install new brakes, they need to wear in a little before they really stop like your old ones did. This can be due in part to a change in the make up of the brake pad material. If you are uncomfortable with either of these issues, you should be able to go back to the shop that installed them and have them look at it.
