Actually RWD is more popular today than 10 years ago. It's not as popular as it was in the 50's and 60's but at least we have more choice than we've had in the last decade.

For the most part, manufacturers moved to FWD to increase passenger space and increase the perceived winter drive-ability.

Because some lunkheaded big wig decided that fwd was the way of the future!!!!!. Actually its cheaper to produce front wheel drive vehicles.

FWD=Less parts/less weight (so better fuel economy).
