It really depends on your personal preference, time, space you have available and how long you want to have a snake.
Under no circumstances should you accuire a burmese or reticulated pythons or an anaconda. These snakes under the best circumstances make horrible pets just in sheer size, time commitment and temperment.
Also, be warned against chain pet stores and internet purchaces as most often they are sick, stunted animals who won't eat You should find a reliable reptile/herp store that breeds their own, one that buys directly from breeders or find a local breeder with a good reputation. You should also be willing to spend at least 300$.
As for the questuion at hand, depending on the size you want you can get a garter, corn or ball python. I have a personal bias toward ball pythons myself just for the temperment and longevity of the species, they also need minimal special features in their cage so they're more cost effective. I have two ball pythons in a fourty gallon tall vivarium with a cardboard box with a hole cut in it on one end and a semi deep water dish on the other; a human heating pad with a towel on it set on low under the box side of the tank is the only heat source they need. People often complain that thier balls are 'bad eaters', this is because of something you are doing as snakes don't go on hunger strikes for poitical reasons. If you care for a ball python correctly it's life expectancy is over twenty-five years.
Garter snakes are good beginer snakes as they don't get much bigger than three feet, corns are the same but can be a bit bittey and fast.

Ball Pythons are very good beginner snakes. They max at about five feet they are generally tame and there is plenty of literature about raising them. The only bad thing about them is they have a nasty habit of peeing on you when you are handling them.
