Dry erase markers are different from other markers because they use colored particles dissolved in a volatile, organic solvent, rather than a traditional ink. So when you write, you are spreading a thin layer of this solution on the board. Being volatile (low boiling point), the organic solvent quickly evaporates, leaving the colored particles behind. It is that solvent that you are smelling.

I'm not certain of the exact compound that is used, but it's probably something like ethylene glycol.

they put some weird chemicals in it that aren't in regular markers to make them dry on white boards

it's the toluene in the solvent. it can and will get you high. it's in how they work.
