I'm reading the Bourne Idenity for summer reading. I just finished reading the book and I realize that the myth of Medusa plays a great role. Can somebody breifly explain the myth without using a lot of names, so I can have an understanding of the myth so I can apply it to the book?

Medusa was a cursed woman with many snakes on her head, instead of hair. So fearful was her appearence that men who encountered her turned to stone. In the book it is utilizing the fear of myth with the aspect that the project had many tenticles like snakes coming from it.

Well, as some of these people have touched on, Medusa use to be a very beautiful woman. However, she was a bit of a fluzy. She seduced Posiedon (god of the sea) and made out with him in another god's temple. The goddess of the temple got pissed because medusa was with him and turned her into a monster (half woman, half snake). As a torture, she made medusa so ugly that a glare from any mortal would turn them into stone.

She is later killed by a prince known as Perseus on his quest to conquer the Kraken. You can actually see this story in the movie called "Clash of the Titans" which was made back in the 80's, but still a great classic greek mythology movie.

It is also a great movie to brush up on all those stupid names and how they relate to one another.

Hope this helps! Enjoy!

Basically Medusa ticked off the Gods, so they made her very ugly looking and gave her snakes for hair, also if anyone looked at her directly they would turn into stone. This became a problem for the people that lived around her so they sent a hero to kill her. Since he could not look at her directly he used his shield to see her reflection and he chopped off her head. Still if anyone looked at the severed head they would also be turned to stone.

OK, Medusa was very beautiful...once. Unfortunately, she pissed off Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty. Don't exactly remember why, but I think it was a love-triangle kind of thing. Anyway, Aphrodite cursed Medusa and turned her into a being that was so ugly that any man who saw her face would turn to stone.

medusa was more beautiful than aphrodite & was so vain about her hair that aphrodite turned her hair into snakes & condemned any man that looked at her to turn into stone.

It was not the ugliness that turned men to stone, it was the look of horror on her face.
