i own my own business and do not like turnover. I have been having problems with an employee of one year(who i personally like and customers like) for excessive cell phone/text messaging . I have asked her several times to keep it to a minimum and my other employee( who is new)came to me and said while I was out of town the cell phone was at an all time high. she came in late, had her husband in the office for 1 1/2 hours, took a 1 1/2 lunch all in the same day. She takes advantage of my good nature. Try's to get away with as much as she can, for example if I were to send her to an offsite meeting ( which i don't anymore because of this) she would take her time coming back dragging it out 30 minutes or so. I pay her to study for a work related exam and told her to go in back room to study my other employee told me she was on the phone the whole time , I have witnessed this as well.impression I am giving her a written warning however wonder if termination is more appropriate. Help!!

in addition to excessive cell phone use even after being warned. she is telling my customers I am never in the office ( in the summer I stay home with my 4 kids and she knew this when she was hired) she also told a new employee that I have had high turnover and she will soon see why. Most recently that I am fat and my kids are all out of control. All not true except about summers off. My husband mans the office at that time. I pay well, am very caring, buy lunches souvenirs when I am out of town the list goes on. Where does all this hatred come from?

Fire her now! She won't change & she has shown you what shee is all about. I guarantee that if you keep her, she will burn you over & over again.

I had this problem with an employee as well. I made cell phone usage against company policy unless they were using it on their break time. Which means all cell phones off while you are on company time. If it is an emergency then the person can call them on the landline. Once you put the new policy in writing, then if the misconduct continues follow up with an oral warning, then a written warning, suspension follows before termination. Good luck.

In my opinoin she should be fired. Why? Just her lack of professionalism is the justification for a firing. In some companies tardyness in any form isn't tolerated. Plus the abuse of corporate property is another grounds in my perspective. As for the hatred is she jealous of your position? Now if you don't want to fire her and she's a smart compentant employee--rein her in by the lasso. U and your husband should have a very long talk with her or
demote her position on the senior corporate staff. Personelly the way she behaves is enough grounds for her to be fired.

You need to sit her down and tell her that if it happens again, you will fire her for misconduct. Put it in writing. Point out that you don't get to collect unemployment if you are fired for gross misconduct.

How are you hearing about all these comments? Are the customers telling you?

To be honest, after seeing your update, your story really isn't ringing true. She makes these comments in front of your husband and customers? Come on ....

I take it you do not have a human resources director. The written warning is important for your self protection.
