Are there any hazards associated with using air filters with metal components?

My wife swears that she was told not to ever use air filters with metal parts in our home's AC system. I think she was either told wrong or heard wrong, as so many filters are manufactured that way.

In my 28 years in the biz, I've never heard that one. Someone misinformed your wife. We commonly install filters with metal perforated backings in commercial and residential units. The metal keeps the filter material from coming out of the cardboard frame. Most all filters are made with metal backing except for the pleated ones.
