it depend of where you are planning to do it, answer these:
how many days of sun have that place at year?
how many hours of sun per day average in every day?
with the equipment you will install how much energy will you collect?
how much energy you will use in regular basis?
how big need to be the batteries to save energy?
this is economic?
usually the houses with have this kind of systems have it just for some specific duties like the warm the water, or the light bulbs. or some appliances where the energy consume is always the same o predictable.

If it is one that can put power back into power grid you can make money by selling extra power your house generate to utility companies.

If you live where you get lot of sun your system might end up paying for itself in time.

So it might work out as an investment.
