I'm a young professional who is swampted. I need someone to clean my house and I haven't the slightest idea how to do that. I know there are listings in the phone book but how do I know they're legit? And, how much does that usually cost?

Best way to find a cleaner is to ask for recommendations from friends and co-workers. Next I'd try craigslist. Anybody can get a job cleaning so be careful. Take a little time to decide what is important to YOU and write it down. Honest and reliable should top any list. For some, merrymaids or a comparable firm is fine. If you have higher standards, valuable furniture, or are looking for long- term, permanent household assistant, pay an individual (not management firm) and train that individual. Otherwise they will clean exactly the same things the same way every week. You will have dust inside the heat ducts -- but the outside will look fine.

Going rates depend on what region of the country you are in. You can find out by inquiring. Raises in salary to acknowledge "a job well done" is just good business practice. It has its own rewards.

Any agency that you go through you will be asking the same question,"how do I know if they are Legit". Though these housekeepers are usually "bonded", it does not mean they know how to houseclean. It means different things to different people. As a professional you must have many different contacts with whom you can talk to. Ask them if they have someone or know of someone. Usually they do. Also another thing to consider is "on the books" or "off the books". Many of today's house cleaners work "off the books" trying to make a little extra income. Depending on your area they work for $10.00 and hour to $15.00 an hour. As you know, you must ask for references whether they are through an agency or not. You will also need time to sit with them and list what you would like done, and what is it they won't do. Some will not do windows, take care of pet messes and etc. You will also need to know who provides the cleaning necessities, you or the house-cleaner.
As with each, you can set limits on how long they are there to clean, which rooms to clean and which are "off limits" and such.
I hope this is of some help to you.

First, sit down and think about what you want them to do. Everything? Concentrate on certain rooms? Is your house already a wreck and will you need a good cleaning to start off with? Usually, they recommend a big cleaning to get you started off on the right foot, and that is more expensive because it takes more time. Follow-up will depend if you want them back weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. I went for bi-weekly.

The first time was about $100, then $40 every two weeks. But I lived in the midwest and had a small place. Don't be shy about asking their prices, but be sure you can tell them exactly what you want done.

If they are in thr phone book, running a business they are most likely legit. You may also try a janitorial company. I used to work for a janitorial company and had to supervise my workers at several different houses as they cleaned them. We usually stuck to just business's but occasionally we would do a house.
