0 think detentions dont work at all!if u just sit there u well think of something else and stuff! also its peaceful and some make u write the rules but that gives u something to do and my son was in it once and he found it very peaceful! and i dont find it as "punishment"I think u should pick up trash or do some handy work and then sit in a classroom.or mabye face the wall in the classroom standing.
sitting down is too comfortable.
also they can make u do something people dont like to do, as in get gum out or like if they are bad in pe, make them do push ups, sit ups, run and repeat.
so what do u think?
and if u do they should call their parents, then that well be something.
and i think they should give corpal punishments(signed by parents of coursse) only if,if they did something very bad, and only with the princple.and have to be same sex if the are spanking u. lol
what do u think?
suspenion gives u freedom(what some kids wnat)
in-house lets u draw or read all day
etc.

Without proper discipline from the parents, anything the school does is pretty much useless.

That is why the most severe consequences put the burden back onto the parents (after-school detention, suspension). The parents are the ones who have taught their children how to behave (they have that kid under their control 5/6 of the year). If the child is not responsive to school-site consequences, then the parents have failed to control him/her. The only other option is to turn the child over to police for juvenile court (which is also sometimes done if the behavior was severe enough).

When a teacher gives a detention, it punishes the teacher. I documented unwanted behaviors and warnings. Of course, this depended on the infraction. I also called parents about behavior and explained what steps would be taken if the behavior didn't improve. For example, removal from class or Saturday school. I have assigned detentions for 6:45 AM. This seemed to work because the parent had to bring the student to school. If you inconvience the parent, behavior tends to improve. In study hall, I had the students stand while holding their books. Depending on the infraction and the warning given, the punishment might be for the remainder of the class period or a day or two.
As far as writing the rule(s) broken, I totally disagree. A teacher is using writing as a punishment. Teachers, especially English teachers, do not want writing to be looked upon as punishment. If a PE teacher wants the student to do pushups, etc., I do not see a problem. Likewise, if the choir director wants the student to sing or do something with music, I believe that is okay.
As a teacher, I do not feel that I should be punished with detention because some idiot cannot follow the rules established by the administration.

I don't think immediate detention is a good thing for several reasons- by immediate I mean when a teacher keeps a child the same day without parents knowledge beforehand. It should be given on another day of the week with parents knowing through direct contact through a one-to-one meeting or phone call. I have heard stories where students get into trouble with parents for being late home. It should not be assumed that all children are coming from the normal average background. Also, I strongly disagree in detention for the whole class when one has not behaved appropriately in class. This is not right. All in all detention isn't a good thing and the word 'detention' is open to debate. I think a student should study all over what he/she failed to do in class at the right time or given a written assignment to do regarding the subject at the time.

Honestly in most cases, after school detention is just as much about inconveniencing the parents so they will insist their child behave. Think about it: If you have to go to school and pick your child up from school instead of them riding the bus or you have to leave work early, you are going to insist that your child behave at school so you won't have to be bothered!

Some things like making them stand a long time or clean things isn't usually allowed. It is considered abuse. Also, if a child got hurt picking up something in the trash or got sick, the parents would have a right to be upset.
