Most of us have only one or two truly "best friends". To qualify as a best friend, here is what is needed.

1. Your friend must have a few likes and dislikes similar to you.
2. You must be prepared to be open and candid with each other.
3. There must not be any hidden agendas when you talk or discuss things.
4. You must trust each other to look out for each other.

From what you describe, your "best friends" are really acquaintances thrown together with you. Cultivate good friendships and just be polite to others.

Much as people don't like him President Bush is capable of cultivating true friendships. he has done that with a couple of world leaders---British and German and Afghan prime ministers.

I have the same thing. I hate annoying people, and I rarely feel accepted. I have a few "friends" in my grade, who treat me really badly. I have some friends who are like 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 years older than me, but we aren't all that close because they're so much older than me. I've been assured by some of those older friends that they think fine of me, that they don't talk behind my back. It's nice, and I've been told that I'm a great friend and a kind person, and I act much older than my age (I'm 14 and people think I'm 16 or 17 when they meet me) but I don't have any real true friends. I have awful crush problems, and I think I do it because all I really want is some true companionship.

In junior high, yeah I had that problem. The friends that I made in high school and college that I keep in touch with are the people I consider true friends. You'll find yours - honestly!

Honestly its sad to say but i believe i have ONE true friend. He is my everything and the only person i truly trust and share myself with. He is my inspiration, my shoulder to cry on, my lips to kiss and he has my heart.

In todays society it is hard to find a "good" friend that will always be there for you through good and bad.

I find myself lucky to have such a special friend in my life

if their talking behind your back they aren't friends to begin with, just get out more and start making new friends, be yourself, and i'm sure you'll find a best friend.
