anti-hero • noun - a central character in a story, film, or play who lacks conventional heroic qualities.

Some that immediately come to mind for me are Jack Sparrow (from Pirates of the Caribbean), Leon (from The Professional), Alex (from A Clockwork Orange), and Mad Max (from, well, Mad Max).

Who're your favorites?

Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate.

Some of the answers below are confusing anti-hero and villain. For example, Spiderman is the hero, and in some ways he may be viewed as an anti-hero since he is sometimes a reluctant hero, and since he has so many personal problems. But the Green Goblin is not an anti-hero! He is the villain (although he is a complicated enough character that some people might want to call him an "anti-villain," if there were such a thing).
