It should be decided by the individual, because we do not live in the victorian era anymore, and we live in America where everyone has the freedom of pursueing what ever career they wish.

By the individual. Parents can offer a lot of advice because they have been in that life stage. Don't discount the advice, listen and present reasons why you feel they might not be correct in the career they are suggesting. Do your homework and research the career you would like to be in. Present logical, mature reasons as to why you think this is better for you than their choice. Keep the lines of communication open with your parents. They only want what they think is best for you.

In my opinion, the individual themselves should decide what they want to do with their life.
- Why? Because, THEY will be the one working as whatever profession they decide, not the parents - The parents should have some say though - not really a say in it but their 'opinion' does matter... Considering they have been alive longer - they know some experience of things and can give their advice, but regardless the individual should do what THEY want and what will make them happy. Who wants a job they don't like but that was choosen for them? NOBODY. that is why I think the individual should have the final say.
God bless!
(I feel like I just wrote a mini report...lol)

To a certain extent the parents can decidelike whether to take medicine or engeneering. They can voice their opinion. But its upto the individual who has to decide. He must hav ethe aptitude and attitude to pursue that course. You must not take a course simply because your parents like it.For example in India grand father and father might be doctors so naturally the father would like his child to study medicine and to continue the herditary tradition of doctors. The individual might prefer engg as he an aptitude for it.Only the individual knows what he can study, whether he has the capacity to finish the course. So the career of the individual must be decided by themselves, and the parents can ath the most can hint about career option. Its left entirely upto the individual to choose his career,he should not choose an career just because his parents wants him to.Its the individual who is going to study and not the parents.Since he opts for his career he will take extra care to finish the course as its his own option to pursue the career.

The only person who can make the final decision is the person themselves. It won't be the parents who have to go off to work everyday so it isn't their right to dictate what their children do. I've seen a lot of people who pressure their children to go into the family business with mixed results. Sometimes it work, if their child is interested in it, but if they aren't or don't have the aptitude it would make the child miserable. And if the parents are financing the education, they still should not dictate what their child's life work is - again, if the child does not have the desire or the aptitude for whatever line of work the parents want them to go into those parents are being selfish. We are all given free will, and if it were me, I would break away from the parents and go off to do what I feel is right for myself. The parents will just have to learn to deal with the fact that their grown child is not a carbon copy of themselves or a piece of their property and has feelings as well as freedom of choice. Good luck!

Who knows. My step mom choose our careers and several of us tried to do something else just to piss her off. Unfortunately we came back to what she said. Dr., Lawyer, Secretary, Architect, Teacher, Mechanic. Wow I just realized out of nine kids six of us actually have careers the other three are x cons and a divorce that got married at 16 and now suffers working what ever job she can take because she does not have a High School Diploma or GED. Plus she now has a criminal history and bad credit. Dam

a career choice should be dont by the individuals, WHY because parents want what is best for you, but in a way what would be best for THEM, oh so and so does this blah blah blah, If you did everything your parents wanted then you would never be happy because you dont even what to do that, WHy waste your parents money on college or whatever for something you are not even sure you want to do............ the only way to be happy is to do things that you want

the individual, because the parents aren't the ones who are going to do the work, therefor the parents should have very little say if any at all
