In my opinion, I think it's a joke. These rookies have not proven anything. I don't see how they have the right to hold out on a contract. If I were an owner I would just sit the rookie. These prima donnas, as good as they are, need to just shut the hell up and play the game. Show us that you're worth your money and then we'll pay you.

For those of you who say think about it from a player's point of view, I say think about it from an owners point of view. You sign a prospect for an unbelievably amount of money and he flops. It's also not worth it b/c if then that player already has his money now he doesn't have to work as hard. For those of you who say they can reenter the draft the following year I say this...Their stock as a player will go down. Sure they may be working out, but that's no real substitute for real hitting and real time game situations.

One name: Cedric Benson. Held out, got his contract, injured.

Of course they have the right to negotiate the best contract they can. Is it always prudent to hold out? No. Do I like it as a fan when a player from my favorite team has a holdout or two? Of course not.
Now, I agree that there are many prima donnas who have not proven their worth yet, but they still are entitled to do what they think they can.
Even TO with his reckless, orchestrated holdout last year that helped to sink my Eagles season had the right to do so. I thought, and think, that he is an arrogant, self-centered moron (albeit a supremely talented one), yet he still had the right to do so. And, I and others had the right to tear this foolish strategy of his apart!

See that is just it they are not under contract, if they fail to reach an agreement they can re enter the draft next year. Just because you get drafted dose not mean you are under contract. They are holding out to get a contract. There are billions of dollars the teams get. The Monday night deal with ESPN was like 5 or 7 billion dollars, plus Sunday TV deals. If all that money is coming in the player should get some of it. After all we watch the players on the field, not the owners in the owners box.

Rookie hold outs are a joke. It should be set up like the NBA. In the NBA where you are drafted is what amount you are slotted for. This would ensure that if a rookie was a bust the team would not lose out and could use the money the sign players that have proved they are worth it.

Rookie salaries are a joke. Here you have totally unproven players demanding top notch veteran dollars. I would love to see base salaries per postion for rookies with incentive clauses that reward work over and above the norm. Think about it, why should a Reggie Bush be worth more before he ever steps on the field than even a middle of the road veteran RB like a Mike Anderson who has two 1,000+ yard seasons under his belt? Because of the potential Bush has? Potential means squat!!!

Yes, they are in the league like the vets, it's a business and great players or players that are expected to be great just want to get all the money they can. If the owner and the agent don't come to a deal before camp, the rookies aren't going to practice and risk getting a career ending injury before they get signed.

It's gotten insane. Reggie Bush must be thinking he's already a shoo-in for the MVP. He's getting paid more then Shuan Alexander! And Clinton Portis! No. They have no right. I think every first round pick should get a 1 year/$100,000 dollar deal. Then the team can resign them for what they've earned in they're rookie season.

Think about it as if you were a rookie. If someone thinks you are possibly worth the money, aren't you going to try and get the sure thing money. What if they planned on showing us what they've got and they have a career ending injury in the get go? Sucks to be them but I'm all right.

Think like this, I am a college star and some rich asshole in the owners box doesn't want to give me a cut on the millons he is making per game, screw that I hold out and hurt him in the wallet when the fans don't see the superstar on the field that they went there to see.

they aren't under contract until they sign one - so of course they can hold out. They're not under any obligation just because they were drafted.
What's pathetic is when a player signs a contract for X years and then 2 years into it, decides he's worth more and then holds out.

Most of the time it is a joke. However, teams like the Eagles are such stubborn jerks that I dont blame Bunkley at all.
