I'm sure this can vary widely, but what kind of volume can I expect if I install a few of these machines around town (the Midwest region) in places like medical office buildings, auto repair places, etc. What number would you consider a really good performing vending machine? How about a poor performer?

"By November, we had sold over 200,000 pounds of product (almost 10 million drinks)" - that is for a coffee vending machine, here is the link: http://www.thevendingstore.com/tgb.html , there is probably other vending machines in there too.

In a establishment like a repair shop figure at least one soda a work day per person.

SOmewhere like a sidewalk in front of a store might be a bit harder. Go sit in front of wal-mart for an hour and count how many people walked by the soda machine and bought one compared to how many people didn't

Sales figures depend on location, price, and choice of drinks (don't expect software developers to prefer the same drinks dentists do).

As to performance, it should be measured strictly in monetary terms (unit terms can easily be misleading, because they ignore margins). You should be computing return on investment. The exact computation would depend on whether you own the machines or lease them.

Geez, Syd....No way to tell! Your question has your answer in it...."...vary widely..."

Bottom line: People do it for a reason, i.e. profit, so I expect that a well-stocked set of machines would yield enough to make it worth while...although I wouldn't put any down payments on you own private island just yet.

Good luck!

These are guesses.
High sales spot 250 daily
Average sales spot 85 daily
Poor sales spot 30 daily

There you go hope I'm close.
