because when i watched it, i thought the fish was a guy and it didn't make any sence.

When getting into, and understanding animated characters, if the story does not directly tell you, it's easier to assume the character's gender is the same as the voice.
When voice actors are picked to do the characters, women are often used to do voices for children, or child-like characters of either sex. Again, the story line may tell you, such as in Finding Nemo, Nemo is called "son" by his father.
For some types of character, the gender does not matter, as in some animals, fairies, elves, etc. I found it more convenient and interesting to believe Dory was a girl,

Dory is a girl. Not only was it voiced by a female, but if you go back and take a look at the movie, I thought I remembered Merlin refering to Dory as "she" in the scene with the Sharks.
