I was going to say "to teach that there is a higher authority in the being of God" but I think there are some religions that believe more in a universal "force" or "energy" instead of an actual Creator.

To be free from the miserable state that we're in. Some religions focus on doing good deeds, some on having less desires, some on having more physical pleasures, some on relying on the help of God.
