To echo previous answers, the advantage is from knowledge of the relative that you wouldn't have from a walk in new hire, which is huge. The disadvantage is that you are unlikely to be hiring the best candidate for the job given that you are drawing from very small pool of potential people to fill a position. So, in some instances a company is disadvantaged thanks to what some criticize as "inbreeding".
Then again, in Asia, most firms are family firms and the family relationships offer value that western firms aren't able to replicate. I think hiring family is under-appreciated. I also wonder if it can work as well in the US as in the East given the focus on individualism here, where disrespecting some family members is unimaginable.

My relatives - yes. I trust them and know them well. Some of my spouse's I would - others I can't stand and wouldn't want to see everyday!

I have done both, works well for us.
I know they are not on Drugs and they know I will treat them well.
