I find myself doing that a lot, and someone told me it was rude. Do any of you think it's rude? I always seem to forget to actually say the words.

naw it's just the fact that people all around u say it so you say it too and it gets stuck in your head and you only say your welcome from time to time...if you really think it's rude then start remembering to say your welcome if u don't care the keep saying it cause i'm sure the person you say it to also says mmmhmmm from time to time

I wouldn't say it's rude, but it's not as polite as "You're welcome." I've heard people with other first languages saying that "you're welcome" sounds, if not rude, sort of pushy, as if the doer is admitting that he did something worthy of thanks. In Ireland, or anyway, in Roddy Doyle books, the usual answer to "thank you" is "for what?" which I think is actually quite nice.

Anyway, no I don't say "Mm-hmm" but sometimes I don't say anything.

I say "happy to do it" I don't believe it's always rude. maybe a little less formal.
