As an African American I think that it is important that we know our history and are educated, but I don't think that slavery should be used as an excuse to be lazy. Yes, we as a people have had a lot of hardships and struggles to overcome (so have other races) and there are still a few walls to knock down but slavery or "the white man holding you down" should not be the reason why you don't work or do anything conducive to your development as a productive member of society.
But I don't think it should just be forgotten or swept under the rug as if it never happened as so many white people and others would like to do. Yes it was a long time ago but the effects of it are still prevalent in some people. It should be talked about and taught to see how we can grow from it and better ourselves. When I think of slavery, yes it upsets me, but I don't use it as my excuse to not talk to white people or be antisocial. I use as learning tool, like a stepping stone to a better life and more appreciation of what I have than a mil-stone (not sure of spelling) as some people do to stay in the same situations and not do anything about it. We should use it to band together and help one another.

IT REALLY DOESN'T. IT ONLY USED THESE DAYS BY IGNORANT PEOPLE AS AN EXCUSE TO EITHER NOT GET A JOB OR TO TRY TO GET OUT OF TROUBLE. SLAVERY ENDED IN THE LATE 1800'S LET'S MOVE FORWARD!

Slavery didn't just affect blacks of the past, it CRIPPLED them. And that crippling effect, sadly enough, still happens today. They separated blacks when they brought them here from Africa and that separation still runs deep. I'm not saying it's an excuse, because it's not. Some people are generally lazy. And people need to stop making a generalization of all black people. We are not all lazy, we are not all ghetto, we don't all complain, and all of us do not blame "the man" for our problems. The same could be said for some white people who are lazy, complain all the time, and blame minorities as the reason why they can't find work or live in nice neighborhoods anymore. Give me a break. People are people, we live and learn by the mistakes we make, and some of us are smart enough to become better than what others think.

This is an interesting question. However, 99 percent of those responding did not or perhaps can't answer the question: "how does slavery effect African Americans of today?" To respond in an intelligent manner, you would have had to taken the time to read some of the current evidence-based research to answer the question. For the moment, all you are doing is sharing an opinion. Not even an "informed opinion" Clearly, you know the difference.

I noticed that mostly white people responded, at least according to their avatars. I don't think we (white people) can possibly grasp the long term effects that slavery has had on African Americans in this country.

I see slavery as more of a historical fact. But, it does create a lot of tension between African Americans and Caucasians because the whole racism issue between both races stemmed from it.

That is only a question that an African American living in the United States could answer. Slavery is long passed, but now the U.S. has different forms of slavery, because imperialism cannot survive without some form of slavery. First it was the chain gangs, and now it is the free (or practically free) labor by the men in jails all over the United States. The majority of these men are African American or Hispanic. When the country deprives a child of a decent education, an equal chance at life, decent and affordable health care, and brainwash the people living at the bottom of society into believing that happiness is in material things, they lead them into a criminal lifestyle. Instead of looking at problems in society, they just blame one person. This is their new form of slavery, and this slavery affects most minorities in the United States. Slavery is over? Ain't that a lie.

I've gave this allot of thought but haven't really done any research though. It seems like the expression old money would apply. With the exception of people who made it on their own allot of millionaire's were raised on money that has been passed down from generation to generation. Since slaves didn't have an opportunity to earn money they got a late start to build family empires if you will. I've always felt that the real problem has been with the "have's and the have not's" in current time and as long as people are too caught up with race to realize that the have's got a real good system of conquer and divide. Something else to remember is that the slave's were prisoners of African war and sold to White's as an act of mercy to spare their life. While slavery wasn't OK genocide is probably a little worse.
