Well a few years ago my parents celebrated their 50th and my elder brother bought them a bottle of wine that was bottled in the same year they were married, and we drank it on that day, which was quite charming.

Now there are a few things to take into account if you like this idea. First is to buy the wine from a reputable dealer, as for the wine to have any prospect of still tasting good, even if it is a good vintage, has more to do with how it was maintained over the years. Was if kept in an appropriate storage environment? Was the bottle periodically turned? Was it recorked at some point if the cork began to show signs of decay?

The second thing to bear in mind is that old vintage wines, often called "faded ladies" very quickly loose their taste once they are opened. Once the wine is exposed to air it degrades very quickly, and so, to be enjoyed needs to be consumed within a very short period of time, ten or twenty minutes, not two or three hours. Also, when pouring an old wine like this, do not shake the bottle about while handling it so as to avoid disturbing the considerable sediment that is likely to be inside, and pour slowly and deliberately, and leave the bottom inch or so in the bottle, as it will be full of sediment and not very palatable.

These things said, my folks found the gesture quite romantic and thoughtful, and it attached a special memory to a special day in all of our lives.

There are "traditional" gifts for each year of married life:

1st: clocks
2nd: china
3rd: glass
4th: appliances
5th: silver
6th: wood
7th: desk sets
8th: linens/laces
9th: leather
10th: diamond jewelry
11th: fashion jewelry
12th: pearls/colored gemstones
13th: textiles
14th: gold jewelry
15th: watches
16th: silverware
17th: furniture
18th: porcelain
19th: bronze
20th: platinum
25th: silver
30th: diamond
35th: jade

Or...just put together a nice photo album for them, or frame a nice family picture, take them to dinner, give them a gift certificate to a movie or show.

maybe something for the house your mom or dad has been wanting, or get them a bottle of wine and leave the house for a night lol.....to the person who said "get a new son", why would they want to do that? their son is thoughtful enough to worry about what to get his parents for their anniversary!
