With gas and taxes being so high. Wouldn't the more straighter roadways cost less to make, less taxes spent, and less waste of gas?

It might be more cost effective when building the roads, but, personally, I'm not in favor of zooming straight down the side of a mountain. We have some mountains in my area and I couldn't picture having a straight road. Not with how the land is shaped. When roads are built turns are sometimes necessary because of the features of the landscape. Things like soft soil, huge boulders that can't be moved, and other factors come into effect when building roads. Plus without the turns, the road would be too steep to navigate at a safe speed. The turns help slow vehicles down.

The roads are built to provide the easiest passage through the mountains. The road has to pass around the features of the mountain and the road building process should have the least amount of impact to the existing landscape. Some parts may be too steep to build a section of road, therfore it must curve around it. A car driving a curved road at a less-steep angle would use less gas than trying to get up a really steep hill.

Straighter roadways on most mountains would lead to unacceptably higher grades to climb, making passage unsafe for trucks and heavy vehicles...and taking a serious toll on smaller engines as well. The only other option is to tunnel straight through the mountain, which has been done in some parts of the country, but is usually not an acceptable solution.

Sure straight roads are better for gas, but they're not cost-effective because you have to plow or tunnel straight through the mountains to make them straight, which is a heck of a lot more costly than building the roads around them (not to mention a heck of a lot safer and a heck of a lot less time-consuming). So no, it would not cost less to make straight roads through the mountains.

How would you build a straight road on a natural structure that is of a round nature?
