Human evolution is heading towards full self-awareness.

Animals are not self-aware, cannot self-reflect, do not discriminate. They are basically on autopilot. Humans have the ability to self-reflect and discriminate. They actually have the ability to go beyond the mind to awaken themselves to the substratum of existence beyond the mind. Some call this enlightenment, freedom or the "sunnum bonum" (highest good).

Most people are not self-aware, but rather are run by their minds, like programmed machines; automatons. Self-awareness takes one off auto-pilot. This is where evolution is heading; where people are no longer unconsciously run by their subconscious programming and instead are fully aware, alert and able to avoid being constantly pulled into the sufferings of the mind and identifying with them instead of with peaceful "Beingness". They stand as the silent, peaceful, happy witness to the comings and goings of the mind and world, like sitting in a theater and watching a movie or a play.

That is one level.

If you mean evolution on a biological level, then we are probably moving into more refined body/mind structures capable of more refined cognition, perception and adaptability. But, this would only be a by-product of increased spiritual evolution and increased self-awareness beyond the mind.

It may appear we are "devolving" due to what we see on the outside, but this is not true. We are simply rising up the emotional tonal scale to allow up more of the suppressed negativity and this is being outpictured in the world as violence, destruction and the like. But, it was in the human psyche for a very long time suppressed down into apathy for the most part. It is now coming up more to be cleared out. So, we are evolving slowly but surely. It just doesn't look like it if you are not looking at where the evolution is truly occurring and are only focused on the appearances of negativity in the world. It is actually a step up when collective consciousness moves from primarily apathy, grief and fear, into lust, anger and pride (which leads to the wars). The step up after this is courageousness, acceptance and finally peace---the pinnacle of human evolution.

Evolution of a species is primarily driven by environmental circumstances. As with other creatures, the human animal evolved in response to the changes in surroundings.

However, humans have reached a point in their development where they can influence the environment, instead (both their own and that of all other living things). So the need to evolve has been somewhat minimized. Perhaps only mental capacity and other cognitive processes may continue to develop.

But there is a dark side. The future of all life forms may very well depend upon survival of the fittest - as humans continue to abuse nature and the earth's natural resources. Evolution may once again be the only way for living organisms to adapt to the ever-diminishing qualities of air, water, and climate.

The body's limit of its ability to change is not known. If it were important enough to enough people, who knows what evolution could be possible. As other people have said, because humans can control their environment so much, there is not a whole lot of need for evolution for most people, because most people are satisfied with the way things are. It would take a great many people that all had similar views on ways they feel about how humans should change for a new type of evolution to take place. Evolution is really up to us and what is important to us.

Our species is going to more-or-less stay the way it is for a while, and then gradually become more and more prone to genetic disorders.
First, we designed our own biological niche. It's not like nature will select for humans with a greater ability to live in temperature controlled homes and eat store-bought groceries.
Second, the most powerful countries in the world believe in the value of individual human life, which isn't a bad thing in itself. However, it means that the blind, deaf, physically handicapped, mentally handicapped, and psychologically unsound are going to be taken care of, in many cases even encouraged to have children. If their conditions are genetic, they will continue to circulate in the gene pool whereas in a completely natural environment, the carriers of the genes wouldn't have survived long enough to reproduce. A simple pessimistic scenario says essentially that today everyone wears glasses or contacts, in fifty years everyone might be on psychoactive medication, in two hundred years everyone might need hearing aids, etc. The likelihood of this is debated, but you get the idea. Since there's no effective eugenic solution to this that doesn't feel like modern Nazism, things will likely continue as they have for a while.
Instead, the next big steps in our evolution will be the most sudden in the history of life. As the world's genes get worse and worse, gene therapy will move from the realm of "Hey, that goes against my beliefs!" to "Hey, that's not such a bad idea." At that point, it's hard to say what will become of the species. Will we be the same as we are now, but free of disease and handicap, or will we be a designer species with the opportunity to give our children vestigal wings and prehensile tails and gills and fur and tentacles? Both sound kinda cool to me.

I think the human race is devolving now. We reached the peak of our development at some point in the 20th century, and there's no longer anything to be gained by evolving because we've become too dependent on technology. Most people are sedentary and overweight, and intelligence is declining with each new generation. We'll soon find ourselves in the world of C.M. Kornbluth's famous story "The Marching Morons", where the "average" IQ was 45 * and a very small number of intellectuals kept everything going by building idiot-proof machines for the masses.

* The average IQ is of course 100 by definition. I think Kornbluth was taking a little artistic license to give readers a point of reference relative to the norm in 1951.

We're not the driving force behind evolution, but we do have an impact on it.

In other species: It's either slowed to a crawl or going backwards because no matter how many endangered species we save or care for we kill thousands of other creatures every day.

For humans: We're deevolving, becoming weaker and more pathetic. I know it sounds harsh and heartless but medical care has allowed those who would normally have died to live, slowing evolution.

Evolution has picked up pace after humanbeing came into existence, as we are one of the few species that has acquired the skills to manipulate evolution, but we need to be careful as there is a good chance that things can go out of hand!!

Evolution is totally unpredictable, because there are an infinite number of factors involved.
Anything, from your choice of partner to climate change, is a cog on the wheel of evolution.
Even your squashing a tiny insect under your foot will change the direction of evolution.

Human evolution is currently imploding; just look around. That doesn't mean that another species is not evolving to take its place at the head of the world as it looks at that time.
