you can handle baby rabbits almost as soon as they are born, but waiting for their eyes to open is best, then as long as you are gentle, and careful you should handle them every day. I used to show rabbits many years ago, and because they have to be handled a lot when being shown I used to handle them from about 5 days. Never really had any problems. I suspect that these were the mummy rabbits first babies, they are more likely to have problems with the first litter as they sometimes roll over on them

I think its when they have enough hair. About 3-4 weeks and can leave the mother at about 6-8 weeks. Its still early days if only one lives. Long ago I had rabbits and the mother often stampled the babbies to death for the first few litters then got better at being a mother.

So sorry for the babies Sarah. Best give the survivor at least a month to settle in before you take it from its mum, that will give it a chance to get used to you and realise you are not a threat, before you handle it.
By all means stroke it after about a week of seeing you every day, but don't pick it up.
Think how you would feel if a giant suddenly appeared and reached into your living room and picked you up.

Was the mother rabbit in a darkened area..such as a box or something? They prefer dark places where they can pull their fur and make nest for their young. I had a rabbit once that would not feed her babies. I found out it was because I did not provide her with a well protected darkened place to have her young. My brother-in-law built a wooden box with a hole in it just big enough for her to go in and have her young. That worked well.

Sorry to hear about the babys, it happens all the time.
You should start trying to pet and hold the baby as soon as the mother lets you. The sooner the baby has contact with people the better pet it will be.

I suggest waiting at least 4-6 weeks to handle the baby.

If she is a first time Mum she probably didn't know what to do. Also I think you should leave them alone after they are born because she can abandon them if she is nervous or feels threatened. Good luck with the last one!

Sorry to hear of your loss.
Looks like you've got enough answers here so I'd conclude that giving it about 1 month before you do anything seems to be the best thing to do.
Good luck.
