It really depends on the style of the residence hall (don't call it a dorm around your hall director-ha!)
It can be a lot of fun or not. Are you going potluck with your roommate, no roommate, or with someone you know?
This can make a difference in your experience. Most universities have a period of time at the beginning of the semester where you can request a roommate change if you find that you absolutely cannot live with them.
The best way to make sure that you enjoy your experience, is to keep your door open as much as possible so that you meet everyone you are living on the floor with.
As for what to bring:
Shower caddy (unless you are in a suite style room)
Towels
Sheets
Computer/Printer (unless it is provided for you)
Clothes
Pillows
Mini fridge and microwave (check with your residental life office to see what the wattage requirements are)
TV (if you want it)
Phone

My suggestion is to remember that less is more to start out with. Bring the basics, you can always go to a store and buy more things. Also, check with your roommate to see what they are bringing so that you don't bring two of things (such as the TV, fridge, microwave, etc)

Living in a dorm can be either really fun or really depressing. You have many opportunities to socialize while living in a dorm. There are always events going on and people to meet. On the other hand the room is usually small, and you have very little privacy. But if you are a freshman looking to make friends it is very much worth it.

...Unless you get stuck with a bum roommate.

Dorm life can be fun and you meet lots of people but it can also be a pain because you are stuck with those people and there is no privacy. Your dorm should let you know what to bring but you will need your personal items, clothes, towels, computer, TV, bedding, and anything else you can't live withouth. SOme dorms require XL Twin sheets with others require regular twin sheets so be sure to check with them. Also, some roommates wait and buy bedding when they get there so it will match.

It's crowded, for one thing. Don't bring much with you, because you'll end up sending half of it back home. I'd bring just what you need (go to the Housing/Residence Life page of your school's website to find out what you need to bring in the manner of appliances and furniture) and get anything else at a Wal-Mart or something near the school after you have settled in.
Dorm rooms are already small, don't make it seem smaller by bringing more than you need. :)

Its kind of like being at camp...there's always something going on and people to talk to; which can be annoying at times. Definitely bring ear plugs and a laptop computer or portable dvd player so you can put on your headphones, watch a movie, and get some peace and quiet! A microwave, mini fridge and a george forman grill are also essential. Making grilled cheese for everyone at 1am is always a hit. Oh yeah, a big, plush area rug is always nice since the carpet is usually rough and dingy. You can get carpet remnants at a carpeting store for really cheap.

Blankets, sheets, pillows, toiletries, laundry basket, a stereo/radio, mini-fridge, laptop if you have one, small TV if you have one. Dorms are different, but most of them only have a desk, bed, and telephone. If you have to share a shower, bring flip-flops in addition to the obvious like towels, etc. Have fun! Bring or buy posters and things to decorate your room...college is great fun :)

it really depends on the school your going to because of the different people and their different ways of doing things. If your talking about the way the dorm looks they're all the same one square room with either a bunk bed or two single beds with a desk.

Depends on where you go. My school was small and the dorm room was smaller than my room at home in addition I had to share it with my room mate. My room mate and I got into arguments and eating each other's food, who gets to watch the t.v. and at what time. Also, there is no privacy. Personally I hated it.

Hi there, go to Bed Bath & Beyond, and they have dorm lists for what you should need. Also, for a fee, they will deliver all your items to your dorm room...very cool! Wish that they had that service when I was in college. I suggest sheets, towels, a rug, pictures, laundry basket, etc.

The worst about it for me is you hardly get any privacy. So bring a mp3 player with headphones. Another thing is a case with a lock, so you can leave all the things you cherish the most inside it and really secure (it's not so much the burglary it's to keep it safe from curious roommates).
