If your tattoo is 6 years old, ask the artist to touch it up for you when you go in about a new one. Odds are he will do it for free, or give you a discount since you are getting a new tattoo from him/her as well.
I personally love tattoos, and did my first one at age 16 (which is now a running joke between husband and I, since I married him) I hand inked 'I (heart) Pat!' on my upper left thigh. Married the guy, but years down the road (I'm 32 now) the tail of the 'a' faded off. It has long since looked like it says 'I (heart) Pot!' Nope, I'm not into pot at all.
At age 18 I went with a unicorn head tattoo on my outter right hip (so cliche) and was to young & dumb (plus shy) to run out of the studio when the artist spit on the needle before inking me. I think I was busy being paralized with fear at the moment to know how to handle that. Yes, he had a beautiful and clean studio, but a bad attitude. ( I had refused to take my underwear off so he could ink me since they would not block the area he needed to work on )
In my mid to late 20's Reverend Dark, whose now pretty famous on the tattoo scene and has been for a long time - inked my own intials (in my writing) on my upper left breast. Time for a touch up by the way for that one. Looks beautiful, the 3 letters all interlock in a flowing script.
Then at age 32 (currently) I found a wonderful artist who is very sterile, and who will not just tattoo anyone. He really cares about the clients, often I see him turn away young women or men who run in for the 'fad' tattoos. He so far has inked a large stone cross with gemstones (colored for birthstones hues of my grandma, husband, and 2 daughters), and a yellow wrapping rose (for mom) onto the back of my neck.
A month or so later he inked a gorgeous hummingbird coming to drink from a purple flower onto my outter right calf. God that one hurt. It starts an inch or so above my ankle bone, and ends an inch or two below my knee. It has black tribal vine work that the 3 purple flowers grow out from. I get tons of compliments on it.
A month or so after the hummingbird, I let the apprentice aka 'White Chocolate' tattoo my right inner wrist with a symbol I drew myself. It's a fancy A and V that interlock and have birthstones in them. A for my daughter's name, V for the other daughter's name. Later the owner and my artist will ink flowers and vines around my wrist (smaller version than what's on my calf) to tie it into the symbol.
I hang out as his shop a lot, and work for him doing things like web site design, and answering the phone, cleaning, etc. You have to earn the right to hang in any ink shop worth it's weight.
My husband has a wolf head with a moon behind it and mist, on his outter left shoulder. Then in old english lettering he has my intials above it, and our wedding date under it.
Just yesterday he went in to my artist (I work for ink, which means my artist pays me for the things I do by giving me free tattoos and piercings) and got a dwarven battle axe inked onto his inner left forearm. It looks awesome like something out of Tolkien (LOTR), and very realistic. I'm into more real looking tattoos than the comic book style looking ones, or cartoonish. Tats that look like portraits, or sketches.
Which ever new tattoo you go with, just make sure the artist and shop is clean, and that the artist knows how to artistically tattoo.

One is a symbol that means fertility and it's on or near my breast, and the other is on the small of my back and it's a funky heart shaped something....I don't know...it's not for me....that one was for my guy to look at while he's rocking my boat! :-) LOL
