I got some pretty weird answers...my name, my husbands name and my pic have NOTHING to do with the question I asked. Your IP address if you know how to use it can really bring you trouble. My friends daughter asked a stupid question online and a man found her and raped her....not the answer she was looking for. MY daughter got online and lied and got her butt harrassed and things sent to her. I NEVER said I didnt trust no one. I just dont think the net is the place to say you are looking for a boyfriend, You never know what yer getting yourself into. Or asking if you have a few pimple looking things in your groin is it an STD...uhmm EWW! Why be stupid and ask such things and why be so crude? The internet is NOT such a "safe" place. Information was put into the computer in order for you to connect to the net, which is your IP address. Those of you who are using the comp because Mom or Dad set it up dont understand this. Im a mother of 5 and I KNOW what the net can do! JUST BE CAREFUL!

Why are so many people asking stupid question is because they like to waste their time and feeling boring at the time or maybe they're complete idiot or just borrow their brother's laptop when he went to toilet or answering phone calls..
Why do you let your underage daughter use the internet freely, why don't you watch her where did she go? Why are you telling us your friend's daughter been raped and your daughter too? Why not telling the policeman, that should solve a bit. If you wanna show us internet is a bad practice to certain people you can show it on other way- not telling things such that...gee I've met some people from the internet and went to hotel too and I'm pre-caution myself too!
Internet is the place where you can get e-mail free, porn free, movie and music free, desktop, laptop and also money even when you sleep, but with the right way, you should succeed.

Chris7xx just about sums it up (without meaning to). Yes, a lot of young people are 'looking for trouble' because they believe it's a safe way of doing so ... and, relatively, they are right. If some of the 12-14 yo girls said the things they are saying on here to strangers in the street, they would be in deep sh*t in a very short time.

To trace someone to a particular house using just an IP address is, in my view, only possible in VERY limited circumstances. The guy must have worked for the ISP or had contacts in it. That sort of information is ONLY available to the Internet Service Provider, though there are ways that it might be deduced if someone had named their PC unwisely* or lived in a relatively unpopulated area (as far as the Internet was concerned).

My feeling is that you haven't told the whole story and, perhaps, your friend's daughter hasn't told the whole story. That is not to excuse what happened (rape is not an excusable thing under any circumstances) but merely to say that carelessness was never a good thing. Scare stories are not a good thing either. The education of young people in the practice of good sense is paramount and education should be based on reason not on fear.

*Edit: I ought to explain that when a PC is set up. it has an internal name (Microsoft actually encourage naming the PC at setup) which will be associated with the IP address when the computer connects to the ISP and becomes networked to it. Anyone who knows the IP address - and I have to say that most chatrooms are responsible enough not to pass on the IP address - can scan that IP address and find out the computer's name. If someone has been daft enough to call it ''s Home PC' then it is no big task to trace the PC to a physical location. However, obtaining an IP address would probably have to be done through an email, which is a second-level stalking activity.

life and the web are the same. you can't do either with your head in the sand. you have to use your head for something besides just growing hair.
