Lincoln represented a political party (The Republicans) who proposed to end slavery. When Lincoln was elected the southern states chose to secede rather than allow the north to tell them they could no longer have slaves. Honest Abe then had two choices, either hold the Union together by force or allow the south to secede. I suppose he could have allowed the South to secede, but he would never have supported the abolition of slavery in the first place if he was willing to allow the south such an easy out.

Lincoln was basically the entire reason for the civil war...one of the most important reasons for the succession of the south was the election of Lincoln. Also it was his major belief that the union could not be seperated so he had no choice but to enter the union. Additionally he was smart enough to know that England and France were lurking in the shadows ready to retake this country if it became divided because the South did not have enough industry to remain independant and the North did not have enough agriculture..as much as they hated eachother they needed eachother to survive.

I know this is a bit off topic and I don't want to offend anyone but you might like to check out a spoof, satirical documentary titled :CSA: Confederate States of America. It asks what America might have looked like if the Confederates had won the Civil War.
Its to be released on August 8th. Check out www.csathemovie.com for a trailer. And please remember it is satire and not anti-American or intended to be racist.

Slavery would have become outmoded due to economic changes and there would have been a reconciliation at some point.
