You'd have to identify the printer attached to the desktop as a SHARED printer on the desktop first.
Then you can install the printer drivers on your laptop.
It WILL make your desktop perform slower however, because now it's having to be a Print Server as well as a workstation.

If the printer is networkable...that would be a better way for both to access it without a penalty. Just hook it into your router.

methods are different on difeerent OSs. The methods described below assume that u 'r using Windows XP on both.

Go to your desktop, goto printers and faxes folder,(Click start menu->settings->printers and Faxes.

Find the printer you want to share. Right Click on the name, click sharing. On the next window, click "Share this printer" and provide a share name in the space provided(or accept the one displayed by default).

make sure that the printer is powered on, and you can print from the desktop.
Get the computername of the desktop(Right click on Mycomputer-> Properties, note the computer name

Now, goto your laptop, do one of the methods explained below.

Method 1

goto Printers and Faxes folder(Start ->printers and Faxes or start->settings Printers and Faxes).

Click on File menu-> Add Printer.
Click Next on the "Welcome to.. " Dialogue window.
on the next window, Click "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer" and click Next
on the next window, click the second option("Connect to this printer(or browse for.....")-> click Next
It will show the computer name of your desktop computer. Under this name, you can see the share name you provided for the shared printer on the desktop computer.
Click this name and click Next.
Select 'Yes' on the next two windows displayed.
You 'r Done.
Check to see the printer name in the Printers and Faxes Folder.
if you can see the printer name there, you have got installed it in your Laptop. Start Printing.

Method 2

Click Satrt --> Run
Type "\\Computer name of the Desktop" (The name of the desktop which you noted before) without quotes.
It will open the desktop computer in your Laptop, where you can see the Shared printer and some shared folders.
Right Click on the Printer name and click Connect.

Now the printer will be installed on the Laptop. Insert the printer CD in to the Drive if windows asks to do so.

set the printer to share on the desktop and then go to network neighborhood on your laptop and browse to your desktop computer and it may ask you for a username and password to connect to the desktop(enter the username and login you use to login to the desktop). Now go to your printers on your laptop and add the printer thats on your desktop system and then when you go to print you just select that printer. There are some variations depending on how your network is setup but I have two laptops on my network and one is part of the workgroup my desktop is on and the other is a school computer which is set to connect to a domain but by going to network neighborhood and selecting my desktop computer and then entering username and password it also prints to the desktop printer fine. good luck

Hopefully, your pc and laptop is in the same network. If this is the case, then go to settings>printer and fax. Click on add printer and then click next. Now, select network printer and then browser for your desktop and then the printer attached to it.

Hmm. I don't know how you can do that, unless both computers are in the same room, like in an office building. Otherwise, I don't see how that's possible.
