From my experience, prenatal vitamins are fine on the Atkins Diet. I was on both, and didn't experience any problems with still losing weight.

On a side note, I did notice that the prenatal vitamins would make my stomach very queasy depending on when I took them. Make sure to take your vitamin on a full stomach, preferably not after eating greasy food (like bacon or sausage.)

Good luck with Atkins. I lost 55 pounds on it several years ago and have still kept the weight off (I went from 175 lbs to 120 in about a year.) I've been off it now for a year, and still feel great from the weight loss. Try out the recipes in the Atkins books--they are great, and they help break up the monotomy that sometimes happens when you are on it for too long!

I think it would be perfectly ok to take prenatal vitamins on Atkins. Vitamins to not contain many calories at all or carbohydrates and if they do they are in such small amounts that it would have no effect on your diet. If you are trying to get pregnant why are you trying to lose weight as well? Unless you are very overweight I would not recommend it. I am a livestock farmer and not to simplify things to the point of equating humans with livestock I have found that females that were slightly overweight got pregnant easier. The females that were the thinnest get pregnant the slowest or did not at all and the very overweight females would get pregnant but would have problems with the pregnancy. By losing weight you are putting stress on your body and I have found that animals with the least amount of stress (fat and happy...not to be derogatory) have the most success with pregnancy. In the interest of the baby you should have a well rounded and balanced diet. Ask your Dr for the best advice.

I am sorry that I really don't know much about the Atkins Diet. I do know that prenatal vitamins are recommended for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive. If you are not trying to conceive quite yet, you may want to stick with a complete woman's multivitamin for now. A prenatal vitamin is even more complete than a multivitamin since it will contain the extra iron and folic acid needed for pregnancy. A pre-conception visit with your doctor may be a good idea since you are trying to loose weight before becoming pregnant. It is usually recommended to visit your doctor before beginning a weight loss program. Some couples are fortunate enough to get pregnant the month they would like to, but realistically you can't always plan a pregnancy that closely.

Atkins Diet Vitamins

I have been on prenatal vitamins since before I got pregnant with my first child over 4 years ago. My hair seems to grow more while I am pregnant, it also gets thicker. So the above post seems more realistic. However, if you are on vitamins, you are going to be healthier, so you skin and hair will be healthier. Healthier hair will probably grow faster. My doctor also told me that I could continue to take prenatal vitamins for the rest of my life, as there is absolutely nothing in them that could hurt you in the long run. They are made for a woman. About the only thing different than a daily multivitamin is the level of folic acid. However, my prenatal vitamins made me sick for the first few weeks that I took them.

I would go ahead and take the prenatal Vitamins.
But, I would stop dieting at least a month before I got pregnant.

you can take prenantal vitamins without being pregnant and they would have no complications with the atkins diet.

now, i will tell you, though, that the best vitamins to take when you AREN"T pregnant are ultra-mega vitamins either from GNC of viatmin world.
here's why....they are packed with adult dosages of essential vitamins and my doctor had me take them before and after mjor surgery to help my body heal better.

i ended up never stopping them, until i became pregnant. then, i switched to prenatals. the reason...b/c those adult-dosage packed vitamins can contain too high levels of certain vitamins for the baby.

SO take a super vitamin right now with your diet, but be sure to stop both once you conceive:)

good luck and have fun trying to get preggers!

take care.

You should seriously think about maybe trying the South Beach diet instead. You can eat modest amounts of the good, "complex carbohydrates" like sweet potatoes, brown rice and oats. They are very nutritious foods that digest slowly. Even the Adkins diet warns about following their diet during pregnancy, and I think it would be VERY easy to pack on serious weight once you conceive, when the green light to eat carbs goes on.

I have a friend who followed the maintenance phase of the south beach diet during her pregnancy. She had been pretty serious on it before she conceived and had dropped about 40 pounds, but was still a good 40 pounds overweight at conception. Her Doc gave her the go ahead to follow the maintenance plan of the SB diet during her pregnancy.. She gained 5 pounds during her entire pregnancy, gave birth to a very healthy 8lb 3 oz baby boy and after it was all said and done with delivery of baby, placenta, excess fluid retention, she was 20 pounds lighter leaving the hospital. I was VERY envious of her to say the least! I was the kind of Mom that had to ware maternity clothes for a month after the babies where born!

Good luck.

You need complex carbs to help your baby grow, and even before you become pregnant you need to begin eating appropriately. Call your doctor or midwife to be sure about what you can and can't do while on the prenatal vitamins.
