Is this question hypothetical? Because honestly, there is no such thing as a true American. We all came from somewhere else originally. Our families migrated here, so there will always be some other strand of heritage involved.

But to elaborate:
Near the end of the Revolutionary war many of Washington's troops where inspired by such a strong man. Many rationalized that G. Washington would make an acceptable leader. The catch- They wanted him to be King! He was approached with this question, which was feasible due to the fact that he controlled the army, But instead he decided to hand over the power to the people and create what would eventually become the greatest country on the face of the planet. The man is a hero!

A true American is anyone that was born in America - and by America I mean the American continent, from Canada to Argentina. I don't know why people in the US call themselves Americans or North Americans when Mexico and Canada are also in North America. The US needs a name, it is the only country that does not have a name.

There's no such thing as a "true" American, anybody born here or naturalized is a citizen. You can't hold everybody up to some patriotic ideal, this is a very diverse country.
