English is great when it comes to silly spellings, the sort that you could never ever guess simply from hearing the word being spoken aloud.
Some words have silent letters, like damn, or psychology, and others are just plain confusing, like bass the instrument, bass the fish and base as in bottom (that must really screw foreigners up)
When it comes to stupidity though, queue must take the first prize because it is pointless... why the ue? followed by the English name Cholmondeley (and no, it is not said that way).

There's a book about spelling called Accommodating Broccoli in the Cemetery because apparently those are the three hardest.
I'm a good speller but have trouble with dependent and independent.
I don't usually spell-check but I will now!
