In actuality humans are more adaptive that most creatures on the planet. That's one of the reasons we've been able to survive so long. There are many creatures that are stronger, have higher instinctive survival skills, and may be smarter within their environment. However, human ability to rationalize, and think abstractly gives them the edge. Birds though adaptive, rely only on instinct and are bound to that. If a situation arose that required abstract thought to succeed, they would probably die.
