In the 19th century, the incessant Westward expansion of the United States incrementally compelled large numbers of Native Americans to resettle further west, sometimes by force, almost always reluctantly. Under President Andrew Jackson, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which authorized the President to conduct treaties to exchange Native American land east of the Mississippi River for lands west of the river. As many as 100,000 Native Americans eventually relocated in the West as a result of this Indian Removal policy. In theory, relocation was supposed to be voluntary (and many Native Americans did remain in the East), but in practice great pressure was put on Native American leaders to sign removal treaties. Arguably the most egregious violation of the stated intention of the removal policy was the Treaty of New Echota, which was signed by a dissident faction of Cherokees, but not the elected leadership. The treaty was brutally enforced by President Martin Van Buren, which resulted in the deaths of an estimated 4,000 Cherokees (mostly from disease) on the Trail of Tears.

Conflicts, generally known as "Indian Wars", broke out between U.S. forces and many different tribes. U.S. government authorities entered numerous treaties during this period, but later abrogated many for various reasons. Well-known military engagements include the Native American victory at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, and the massacre of Native Americans at Wounded Knee in 1890. On January 31, 1876, the United States government ordered all remaining Native Americans to move into reservations or reserves. This, together with the near-extinction of the American Bison that many tribes had lived on, set about the downturn of Prairie Culture that had developed around the use of the horse for hunting, travel and trading.

American policy toward Native Americans has been an evolving process. In the late nineteenth century, reformers, in efforts to "civilize" Indians, adapted the practice of educating native children in Indian Boarding Schools. These schools, which were primarily run by Christians,[5] proved traumatic to Native American children, who were forbidden to speak their native languages, taught Christianity instead of their native religions and in numerous other ways forced to abandon their various Native American identities[6] and adopt European-American culture. There are also many documented cases of sexual, physical and mental abuses occurring at these schools.[7][8]

The Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 gave United States citizenship to Native Americans, in part because of an interest by many to see them merged with the American mainstream, and also because of the heroic service of many Native American veterans in World War 1.

most scientific evidence shows that Native Americans were probably the first inhabitants, though there is a little evidence showing that there might have been earlier inhabitants. However, the idea of America is not an American Indian one. It is a combination of several different factions mostly European. The Puritans gave north America the principles of John Locke which the constitution of the United States is based on. the German immigrants brought their culture. the slaves brought Africa, and so on and so forth. America is an idea that grows with each wave of immigration for better or worse. the native American population has of course contributed to this idea as well, but mostly against their will. I think in contemporary society many native have adopted this idea more readily than in the past. Being A U.S. citizen I tend to be centric in that way and know less about Canada, Mexico and South America.

Well no. Although they were here first, America didn't exist for quite some time. Everybody over here is a real American. The American Indians were the first inhabitants.

All groups with power treat smaller groups badly and take what they want. Most countries have something similar in their histories. It's not something to be proud of, but it's common human behaviour.

Nope. They were just the first immigrants, from Asia. They are actually related to the Mongolians and Chinese.

Invaders always move in and take over; it has always happened anywhere that there have been human migrations, which is everywhere. For example, the Greeks aren't indigenous to Greece. When they invaded, they displaced and took over other people who had moved there before.

The only thing about the American Indians is that the invaders didn't kill them all off or assimilate them all, the way most invaders do. And then they made the other big mistake of teaching them to write, so they could complain. And then we listened to their complaints: you never heard of all the displaced and killed off and taken over folks that the Romans invaded able to complain. We'll know better next time! ;->

How ought to you've envisioned them to help the individuals in the time of 9/11? What ought to you even choose them to do? What ought to all of us do in a concern which includes the homicide of thousands of possibility free people? Mankind should be nowhere if all of us concept with the mentality you probably did. Why would not you help the helpless? in case you got here across a helpless deserted infant, ought to you bypass it by technique of with dismiss, or help it? regardless of the reality that if that infant hasn't ever performed something for you, ought to the idea not in any respect even go your innovations to resign and coach love and compassion to it? yet I see the position you're coming from. take a seem on your own outdoor before taking off into the international. sure, the authorities could pay more effective interest to its own united states, yet there is not something incorrect in helping yet another fellow man or woman, is there? And in such terrible circumstances as this, i hit upon it brings people mutually like not something else each and every ought to. that's somewhat heartwarming, extremely. :)

No, because there was not America until the European settlers created it.

They were otherwise just a bunch of aborigines living tribal lives who got overrun by a superior civilization.

This is the story of all human history - the displacement of one peoples by another peoples. There is no going back.

And don't forget, the Indians were no angels themselves. They let themselves be used as mercenary killers in wars between the French and British and between the British and US.

Yes, the Indians discovered America.
Then Columbus or Vespucci ran into it.
Will everyone leave once that is realized? Will the KKK go back to Germany once they find out they are not living in the father-land?
Will we give Texas back to Texas?
Will we give Hawai'i back to Hawai'i?
'Fraid not. Too much money out there to be printed up at a whim.
