This actually brings up a very good point... when I was younger and asked a parent or a teacher how to spell a word, there response was "look it up in the dictionary". Now, if one does not know how to spell it in the first place, how would you find it in the dictionary? Yes, true that you could have a close idea on some words and be able to match a definition but what if you don't know how to spell the word or what a word means? To wrap this up, teachers should be more sensitive and ask a follow up question such as "Do you know the definition?" before just referring the reference which may not be so useful.
