Either explanation is possible. One looks to science for verification. The other looks to faith. Perhaps God (or, as I prefer, "The Creator") is the Universe.

Well, simple.. see the bible says ....
Just kidding.. it's quite funny you come up with this because I had the EXACTELY same thought when I was like 8 years old.. so far nobody has been able to answer it without quoting the bible.
I doubt they will now..
(this book is true, because it says it is true, therefor it's undeniably true.. what do you mean you don't understand? You're not supposed to understand.. that's the whole idea of believing! You just have to FEEEEL he exists.. how else would you explain the complexity of the world in a fashion that believers could understand and have peace with?)
My answer.. God can only exist as an abstraction of "EVERYTHING".. that includes you and me are part of it.. It's the energy out of which everything exists.. it is that very energy itself.. so it was there when the big bang happened, it exists in forms of matter, air, flesh, as all these exist purely out of energy (according to the strings theory, matter IS made of pure energy itself too).
The other answer is, God did not create man in his own image, but man created God in his own image (that's why God is assigned human like treats like love, anger, dissapointment, long beard, kindness, kind voice, feelings, thoughts, condemnation, etc. etc. all human like traits).. and I believe God is man's own idealistic image for oneself.
Think about it.. what drives humans? when we think we have it all, we want more.. look at scientific developments, from internet, mobile phone, medication to cure the sick, happiness, etc. etc. when will these developments end?
Simple.. when we have become like what we believe God is.. all knowing, all controlling, living in a wold of no pain, no sorrow, becoming immortal, perfect and beautiful, become omnipotent, all knowing, omniscient, onmipresent (be everywhere and nowhere at any time we wish, mobile phones, internet and other virtualizations of presence in time and space, are all precursors for this).
So, God is our own imagine of our own ideal self, and heaven is our own image of our own ideal world.. God was created by man in their own image.

Once, you realize what God really is and that He is you, such questions will not have meaning for you, and, you will have no need to ask them.
